Homeschool Tips: 3 Tips on Teaching Reading

Welcome to my Homeschool Tips Series! Today I want to talk about three tips on how to grow a strong reader.

READ ALOUD. Listening to you read to them or an audio book is a great way for them to understand how fluent reading is supposed to sound.

FOLLOW ALONG TO FOCUS ON WORDS. As they read through a page, have a ruler underneath the sentence they are reading, a piece of paper to cover the rest of the text, or their finger to follow along.

FOCUS ON PHONEMIC AWARENESS. Decode the sounds in their own distinct section. For example, when they read the word CAT let them go /c/ and /a/ and /t/ iscolating each letter as they work on sounding it out.
